Here is a video guide, put together with the advice of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London, describing the first things to know about how to care for your dog.
I second the advice about cleaning up after you dog on a walk. Don't let your dog use the neighbors' yard to do his duty. That's more than an insolent aggravation. If every owner kept every dog's do in their own yard, a vast amount disease (in both humans and pets) would cease. There are a plethora of parasites spread this way.
That's because so many people have pets that they are densely populated in our towns and cities, much more densely populated than they would be in nature. That creates an unnatural situation in which disease can spread like wildfire. It would be no problem if it weren't for irresponsible owners who don't keep their pets on their own property and pick up after them on walks.
Don't let your dog run where he may come in contact with another dog's droppings. Then that dog licks your child's face. Don't do it. Just don't do it. Keep him in your own yard. If you keep him in your own yard and keep other dogs out of your yard, you may never even have to worm.
