Here is a video guide to training your dog to obey you, put together with the advice of Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London.
But don't expect train a terrier as easily as other breeds of dogs. And Cairns are probably second only to Jack Russell terriers in their resistance to manipulation. They don't have to mind you and will REmind you of that at every opportunity. They won't prostitute themselves to you for a doggy treat, either.
But don't yell or hit them. That isn't just wrong, it will do you no good.
Does this mean that training Cairn Terriers is hard or impossible?
No, not at all. It just means that you have to put yourself in the dog's shoes to know what's going on, so that he isn't outsmarting you at every turn and training YOU. Terriers aren't motivated the same way as dogs bred to herd or work or sport hunt with humans. So, terrier training methods vary somewhat. Terriers are "game" dogs, ready for anything, always ready for the chase. In fact the chase (not the kill) is what they hunt for. So, you have to interest them in training and make it fun. If you make it a battle of egos to enforce submissiveness, you're gonna lose.
But if you make it fun, you'll both have a blast.
