Here is a video guide to training your dog to sit and lie, from Battersea Dogs and Cats Home in London.

VideoJug: How To Train Your Dog To Sit And Lie Down

Terriers in general are harder to train than other breeds, because of their independent nature. They are also stubborn. Treats they can take or leave. They have no need to obey you. They are bred to hunt on their own, not under the command of a master.

They are proud animals. But free of vanity and ill will. So, you can work with them.

This means that you need to be better at training to successfully train a Cairn. A Cairn will love to learn things that impress you. They are hams who love to show off how smart and great they are. Take advantage of that. Cairns are very smart and capable of learning cunning tricks.

So, your attitude is the principal factor in whether it works out. Make it fun. Remember that a firm sounding voice isn't the same thing as a harsh sounding voice. If you feel the need to cow and dominate, neither you nor your dog will be happy with the results. Keep training sessions short and fun.

The most difficult thing sometimes is figuring out how to get your dog to do what you want the first time, so that you reward the behavior. This is where tips come in handy, like those in the video above. For example, you may just have to wait for him to sit, before you can say, "Sit" and reward him for his accidental obedience.
